Members' Update 34/09
Dear members, In this Update:
- EUS SUSCEPTIBLE SPECIES LIST IN THE EU
- SEMINAR AT SHAQUARIA
- AQUAMAZONIA 2010
***** EUS SUSCEPTIBLE SPECIES LIST IN THE EU In the last week your Secretary General visited the European Commission for two different events. OFI participated in the Animal Health Advisory Committee. In this meeting it became clear that Europe shall develop a new Animal Health Law in which all exiting legislation will be gathered. OFI will be involved in this process and given the opportunity to give its input. In a meeting two days later Your SG attended a bilateral meeting with the Commission on aspects related to ornamental fish imports. EUS susceptible species list: the present list will be adapted. The new list will be more in line with the list of the OIE. No time schedule was given but the need for urgency was stressed as exporters and competent authorities must be able to prepare. The presently very strict rules for quarantining will be adapted to the characteristics of the diseases. This should result in a system with which exporters can work. The situation with the number of health certificates remains the same: some countries will accept fish, shrimps and snails on one certificate, others will not. There was little flexibility at this point. Another topic of discussion was the request of members from several countries to be included in the countries list of the EU directive (necessary to ship species susceptible to KHV, WSD and later EUS to the EU) or to be included without the restriction for carp. We were fully updated on the procedures and we have informed the interested parties on these procedures. SHAQUARIA 2009 From 16-18 October OFI will participate in Shaquaria 2009 in Shanghai. The show also has a two-day seminar with on the 16th your SG as first speaker on what is happening in the industry worldwide and on the second day Josiah Pitt of OFI member Aquarium Industries (Australia) on the status and prospects of the Australian industry. AQUAMAZONIA 2010 Despite the difficult situation of the ornamental fish industry in Manaus and Barcelos, the first Ornamental Fish Show Aquamazonia 2010 will be held from 23-27 January 2010 at The Studio 5 Conference Centre, Manaus, Brazil. Due to the recent closing of some exporters the trade has become difficult and several collectors in Barcelos seem to be seeking other sources of income. Aquamazonia should be the perfect way to become updated on the situation, find new routes and make new contacts. Unfortunately the mayor of Barcelos moved the ornamental fish festival in Barcelos to the end of December. As a result it does no longer coincide with Aquamazonia 2010. ***** With kind regards, Alex Ploeg & Roberto Hensen OFI Secretariat
