China and the Ornamental Aquatic Industry

Dr. Alex Ploeg, Secretary General, Ornamental Fish International
The article is based on a presentation given at Aquaria China 2004.

To the average westerner, China is a very large country, inhabited by an enormous amount of hardworking people, individuals with different behaviour, different food, a language which is very difficult for us to understand and speak, and a society that appears unfamiliar and somewhat mysterious. However, not all Dutch people wear wooden shoes and they do more than simply grow tulips, not all Americans drive cattle in the prairies, not every Indian rides elephants and the English do not all drink their martinis shaken, not stirred. Once we get to know one another, we will all see that we are more similar than we might have expected, and the Aquatic Ornamental Fish Trade is one way for us to get to know each other.
